AARP Foundation Joins with L.A. Kitchen

AARP FOUNDATION SUPPORTS L.A. KITCHEN TO FEED THE HUNGRY

Here's a statistic to keep you awake at night. The United States, one of the richest countries in the world, wastes 40% of its food each year – 49 million tons! -- according to the National Institutes of Health. Almost half this waste is perishable fruit and vegetables.

AARP Foundation recently gave its first three-year, million-dollar grant to a farsighted hunger activist, Robert Egger, whose D.C. Central Kitchen has been turning donated food from local businesses into meals that feed 5,000 needy people a day, as he starts L.A. Kitchen in Los Angeles County. It's a good place to expand: Nearly one-third of the county's homeless are age 50+, and LA County has the highest number of hungry people in the U.S.

NEW LOOK FOR NO. 24 DRIVE TO END HUNGER CHEVROLET

Fans of Drive to End Hunger will notice some changes this year – both to the No. 24 car on the track and to the Drive to End Hunger mobile display at the race track. For the No. 24 car, the changes are big. This year NASCAR is debuting the "Generation Six" car in the Sprint Cup Series. The "Gen6" cars allow the sport's auto manufacturers– including Chevrolet– latitude to more closely match the design of their

on-track models to their sister versions at the dealerships, like the Chevrolet SS.

For Drive to End Hunger, the result is a car with an evolved body shape shown in the newly contoured hood, front end grill, and back end, among other changes. For the first time, NASCAR is allowing sponsor branding on the car roof: It's the perfect place to showcase the Drive to End Hunger logo's "forked D" as a stand-alone image.

Changes are underway at the track, too. Starting in Daytona, visitors to the at-track mobile display can participate in a live trivia game that tests their knowledge about hunger, Jeff Gordon and NASCAR. Trivia game winners will receive special prizes. There is also a photo opportunity: Visitors may take their photo with a digital representation of Jeff Gordon and the 24 car. Most important, once again there will be opportunities to donate to help hungry older people.

BARRETT-JACKSON AUCTION RAISES $350,000 FOR DRIVE TO END HUNGER

Two cars donated by Ron Pratte, a car enthusiast from Chandler, Ariz., and Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports, brought in a $350,000 donation to help Drive to End Hunger at the Barrett-Jackson collector car auction Jan. 19. The cars were auctioned as a single lot, with the proceeds donated to AARP Foundation's fight against senior hunger.

Pratte donated a 2006 No. 24 DuPont Monte Carlo race car, which Jeff Gordon drove onto the stage; he had driven that same car to two victories and two pole positions on the NASCAR circuit. Hendrick donated a limited edition 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo street car, specially designed and built by Jeff Gordon Chevrolet, which AARP Foundation President Jo Ann Jenkins drove onto the auction stage.

EAT CLEMENTINES, FIGHT HUNGER

C.H. Robinson Worldwide is joining AARP Foundation in Drive to End Hunger. The company is offering specially designed packaging – or CARtons – on three- and five-pound boxes of Tropicana clementines at stores around the U.S. The CARtons include images of four-time NASCAR Cup Series Champion Jeff Gordon and the No. 24 Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet.

Both the three-pound and the five-pound box will carry a Quick Response (QR) code that, when scanned, sends users to a secure website where they can donate to Drive to End Hunger. Shoppers who donate $24 or more will receive a Drive to End Hunger hat. It's a great way to make a difference!

Jeff Gordon got to be someone other than the man behind the No. 24 Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet on a new TV show Jan. 9. As these videos show, he was "Jeffrey," an auto store clerk trying to sell the Quaker State oil can with his photo on it, on I Get That A Lot on CBS.

The show features celebrities trying to trick everyday customers in cases of supposed mistaken identity. The feedback from the critics was, "Great job, Jeff!"
