The Augusta Age-Friendly Committee has started a program to help elderly and disabled residents sand their driveways this winter.

A free bucket of sand will be delivered to the home of seniors unable to fill and haul sand to spread at their homes.

'Sand Buckets for Seniors' was created to help reduce falls and injuries of isolated, shut-in, or homebound Augusta residents.

The city's Bureau of Parks, Cemeteries, and Trees will be distributing the buckets after Thanksgiving.

"Anybody who is over the age of 60 or disabled, we're looking at people who are unable to get out to Public Works Department and pick up their own buckets of sand. So if a person is under the age of 60 but they have a physical disability that limits them in being able to get out and get their own buckets, then they're eligible as well," said Sara Grant, Co-Chair of the Committee.

If you wish to be added to the list for the service, call Wendy Somes at the Buker Community Center 626-2350.

Community members are also encouraged to attend Age-Friendly Committee meetings, which are held at City Hall the first Tuesday of each month.
